Hello everyone !

My name is Irene Grootenboer, I'm 21 years old and I live in France (near Paris).
I'm in the fifth year in an engineering school called ESIEE Paris, and I'm majoring in Embedded Systems. I will stay in Mexico at the TEC for one semester. I really want to learn Spanish, discover the country and its culture.

I chose this programming languages course because I want to improve my programming skills and be more confortable with it.


I have two main hobbies : music (I have been playing the violin for years) and sport (I play tennis and  rugby in a women team in my ingeneering school).

I also like to go out with my friends, I love partying and spend good times with my family.
Furthermore, I am a real fan of Disney movies (Yes I know I'm still a baby). At this moment when I have time to spend, I read the book "La couleur des sentiments" (In english "The Help") which talk about the racial segregation in the United States during the early 1960's.

I hope I will have good times here in Mexico !

The roots of Lisp by Paul Graham

In this article, the author Paul Graham tells the history (“the roots”) of the programming language Lisp. John McCarthy has built Lisp in 1958 with only few simple operators and a notation for functions. The name Lisp is a mix of the words “List” and “Processing”. Full of mockery was made because of the use of many parentheses in the Lisp syntax, giving a funny acronym for LISP: "Lots of Irritating and Silly Parentheses". Because of its expressiveness and flexibility, Lisp had a lot of success in the artificial intelligence community. Comment of the article “Beating the Averages” by Paul Graham (2001)

Viaweb is a startup created in 1995 by two developers: Robert Morris and Paul Graham.  This startup, written in Lisp Language, is based on a web software which propose to create online stores.  Some people would say that it’s not useful to learn a language like Lisp but this acquisition will necessarily improve the programmers’ skills: it develops a new way to think, to organize and structure a program; and this is the case for any other language.  In the article, the author makes a comparison between a programming language and the Latin language (which are two “dinosaurs” of the languages). Comment of the article "The Semicolon Wars" by Brian Hayes

In a first part, we will see the differences between the programming languages and human languages, and how they can be similar. In a second part we will see the different wars and debates that have marked the programming history. In a last part, we will see the ways that developers choose a programming language. In this article, the author makes a comparison between programming and human languages. It is true that there are similarities with the evolution of the languages but also differences as regards the time that it can take to improve and change them.
